Five friends all turning 30. Countless rounds of drinks fire up conversations that spin around mundane and the serious. Midnight of Saturday until the wee hour of the last round of orders at the Penguin café/bar/gallery.
This is the scene of the Last Order sa Penguin, the 2001 Palanca Grand Prize winning play of notable playwright, director and filmmaker Chris Martinez, which will be brought to life by the Dulaang UPB (University of the Philippines Baguio).

When the sun shines, we’ll shine together
Told you I'll be here forever
Said I'll always be a friend
Took an oath I'ma stick it out till the end
Now that it's raining more than ever
Know that we'll still have each other
You can stand under my umbrella... Ella... ella... ella... :D

My first semester as a novice college instructor here at the university is already rolling away to a close with more than just a month to go before I toss off of my students' egos with the grades they deserve (hehehe).
However, it sure isn't going to be a walk in the park (I bet my ass) considering the boulders of workload I have to hurdle before enjoying what I hope is a sanctifying semestral break. It's a mudslide of chores for me - from daily course preparations to assigning and checking student class works, from formulating exams and supervising student theses to accomplishing my...
La Belle Baguio

I woke up to another chilly and immensely foggy morning here in Baguio City. It was just 6:45 when I started scurrying towards my first class at the university. Suprisingly, I could hardly see where I was heading to the moment I stepped out of the house. Everything was silhouette to the naked eye, as if heaven had decended and cloaked every abode, street lamp, tree and all in view with its majestic white cloud. The ground was drenched from what had been an overnight heavy downpour. There was slight sting in every kiss of the howling amihan on my bare cheeks.

It has been like it... (more)

ERGO: Gender, manhood per se, is socially constructed

I got this from an email. Interesting.
The International Rules of Manhood:

1: Under no circumstances may two men share an umbrella.

2: It is OK for a man to cry ONLY under the following circumstances:
(a) When a heroic dog dies to save its master.
(b) The moment Angelina Jolie starts unbuttoning her blouse.
(c) After wrecking your boss's car.
(d) One hour, 12 minutes, 37 seconds into "The Crying Game".
(e) When she is using her teeth.

3: Any Man who brings a camera to a bachelor party may be legally killed and eaten by his buddies.

4: Unless he murdered someone in your family, you must... (more)

Saving law school for later (or never)

The last time I said I wanted to become a lawyer was when I was six years old (the same year I said I wanted to become a doctor, haha). Of course we know that everything to a clueless child is a lot easier said and imagined than to any undecided grown-up. As fast as I can say "fade to black... and cut!", that ambition died away from my mind especially when I got too much penchant for TV and decided to take up Broadcast Communication in college.
But a couple of weeks ago, I had the surprising guts to download the LAE form, accomplish it, and save it for submission. I had been contemplating on... (more)

I have a crush.
I have a friend.
Just lately I found out that:
My crush has a suitor.
My friend has a cousin.
My crush's suitor happens to be my friend's cousin.

Meanwhile, I have an ex-girlfriend.
My ex-grilfriend has an ex-boyfriend.
My ex-girlfriend's ex-boyfriend happens to be the best friend of my crush's suitor who is my friend's cousin.

Last Saturday afternoon, I was invited by the Manila Center Chancel Choir to render a special number during their devotional session. Being the ever instantaneous I'll-save-the-day-basta-for-the-ministry bibo that I am, I said yes and eventually sang "Calvary's Love" along with a friend of mine on the piano.
After hurdling the sharps and the flats and eventually punching the last note of this inspirational masterpiece, I went back to my pew -- very much satisfied -- and thanked God for holding out the sun and not letting loose of what could have been a heavy downpour outside.
Meanwhile,... (more)
